About GodsBattle
GodsBattle Online is a free massively-multiplayer role-playing game set
in a mythic Ancient Greece — the Greece of the storytellers, where the gods
are neighbours rather than legends, and where a quarrel on Olympus is settled
by mortals with spears.
It is built in the shape of the classical MMORPG: an open world you walk
across rather than teleport through, levels that mean something because they
took you a while, gear you earn and then argue about, and a server small
enough that the people you meet are the people you keep meeting.
The world
Greece is the stage. Sparta and its marshes, the roads north, the temples the
gods actually answer from — you travel it on foot, and the distance is the
point. A portal is a spell somebody has to cast, not a menu, and the two you
learn first go to the only two places that matter.
Sparta and Athens
There are two cities, and there is no third.
| City | |
|---|---|
| Sparta | Holds that a thing is proven by surviving. Everything it builds, it builds to be defended, and it measures a citizen by what they are willing to stand in front of. |
| Athens | Holds that surviving is not the same as deserving. It argues first and commits late, and it has never once been late to the field. |
You pick one at creation and it does not change. It decides which gate opens
for you, where you wake when you die, and who is already an enemy the first
time you meet them. The gods have their quarrels, but they are settled down
here, by people from one of two cities, with spears.
Who you can be
Four paths, chosen once, with no respec at a shop counter and none of them
strictly better than the others.
| Path | In a sentence |
|---|---|
| Warrior | Stands where the line would otherwise break. |
| Champion | Closes the distance and does not give it back. |
| Mage | Ends fights early, or dies deciding to. |
| Priest | The reason a party survives its own mistakes. |
How the server is run
Free to play, and free to keep playing. There is no subscription, no queue,
no key.
Donations pay the hosting bill. Everything they grant is cosmetic or
convenience, and nothing sold will ever put a stat on your character that
another player cannot earn. That is not a launch promise with an expiry date
on it — it is the reason the shop exists in the form it does.
The staff are volunteers. When something breaks we say so, in the news, with
the details. When something is unfinished it is listed as unfinished rather
than described in the present tense.
If you want to know what is built, what is being built, and what is currently
held together with rope, that is all in the news — dated, so you can
see how fast it is moving.
Getting in
Make an account, take the launcher, and it will bring the client up to date
on its own. Then pick a realm and a city, and go and find out whether the
crocodiles outside Sparta have learned anything since last patch.
