Pets are real now: hatch them, feed them, send them to work
Pets were on our "half-built" list a month ago — "early, and rougher than the rest." They have moved.
The life cycle
A pet starts as an egg in your bag. From there:
- Hatching. Use the egg and a pet appears with its species, nature, gender, food type and starting aptitudes — one of 44 pet types across 484 aptitude rows.
- Feeding. Satiety, amity and lifetime are real bars, shown in the detail window. Feed a hungry pet and they move.
- Growth. Pets earn experience along a curve of their own, unlock skill slots and learn skills from books — one of each type.
- Work. Send a pet to work for 1, 3, 8 or 24 hours. You pay a fee up front, in silver or gold, and the pet brings you experience and talent points when it is back. Call it home early and you are paid a fifth of the experience.
- Transformations. Merge pets for a stronger one, rebirth them to start again with an advantage, contract and bind them to you, seal them away, unite them, and catch wild ones.
What a pet does for you
A summoned pet is not decoration. It applies buffs to its owner — its bonuses are folded into your own stats — and the merge window previews exactly what a merge would add to you before you commit ("Shown above is a preview of the merger result…").
What we have played, and what we have only tested
This is the important part.
Played through on a live server: hatching an egg into a pet; the detail window with every bar and slot; sending a pet to work (a shift that cost 246 silver and paid 190 experience) and logging out and back in mid-job to find it still going; calling a pet home early and getting the reduced payout.
Passing automated tests, not yet played through: feeding, skill books, the transformations, dispatch and healing, and other players seeing your pet beside you. The server's whole suite — over two thousand tests — passes with all of it. But a test is not an evening spent with a pet, and we will not claim the second list is polished until we have had that evening.
Still to come
An NPC menu for the pet windows, a Renaming Stone, the experience potion and the fuller pet-info window are all planned.
